5 Reasons Why The Super Bowl is an Awesome Event!

image via draftpacks.com
Reason #5 - The Commercials

There's a reason why Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day of the year for American advertisers, who pay ridiculous amounts of money for a 30 spot during the broadcast.

Last year's game had a record-setting average of 111 million viewers.  That's a lot of eyeballs.

My Top 5 Anticipated New Releases of 2012

(Photo via muse.mu)
5 - Muse - Title TBA - Fall 2012

Muse has been riding high since the Twilight effect and are looking to keep this momentum going. According to lead singer Matt Bellamy, this album might sound a little different:

All joking aside, I expect Muse to keep pushing the envelope as they continue their musical evolution.

The Most Interesting Man in the UFC

Chael Sonnen is crafty, unpredictable and mean. He's also one hell of a fighter

By Jody White

“I don’t do game plans,” explained Chael Sonnen to a group of reporters in 2011.  “Two half naked men are going to get into a steel cage and fight for the applause of a drunken, rowdy crowd in Houston, Texas on a Saturday night. We don’t need to plan for this.”

My Fantasy Line-up For The 2012 NHL All-Star Game In Ottawa

With the NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft completed, here are my coaching decisions for the All-Star game line-up:

Crowdfunded Documentary About Cassette Tapes Needs Pledges To Hit Goal

UPDATE: Taylor and Smoot's Kickstarter campaign has come and gone. They have successfully collected the 25K they requested and will go ahead with the completion of their documentary. I'm quite surprised that they hit their target, since they were sitting at 10K the day before their deadline. Congrats and we'll keep you posted as more details become available.

(Photo via profilebrand.com)
Zack Taylor and Seth Smoot are looking to release a cool documentary about everybody's old school music consumption medium of choice: the cassette tape. If you're like me, you lived and died by tapes back in the day, recording that new hot track from your fave radio station and switching on the Dolby noise reduction on your boombox.

From Taylor and Smoot's Kickstarter page describing the project:

As recorded sound continues its love affair with the downloadable, ethereal digital file, the tangible artefact is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Help us celebrate the A Side, the B Side, the mixtape, and the whole of cassette culture by supporting Cassette: A Documentary. We'll look at all parts of popular culture influenced by the cassette, including hip-hop and B-Boy culture, indie rock, home recording, and beyond.

Funding platform Kickstarter is a great tool for artists to solicit cash needed to complete their vision. If you dig Taylor and Smoot's idea for this doc, head on over to their Kickstarter page and get your generosity on.

Need a little more convincing? Here's the trailer for Cassette: A Documentary.

Toronto Teens Send Lego Man On Space Voyage

image via citytv.com
From cp24.com:
TORONTO — Two Scarborough high school chums have taken their love for science to new heights.
Matthew Ho and Asad Muhammad, both 17, figured out how to get a Lego man to boldly go where few have gone before -- by launching him into space on a helium balloon.
And they managed to capture the entire amazing voyage on video.
The flight of the Lego man -- seen proudly holding a Canadian flag as the world gradually drops away below him -- can be viewed on YouTube.
The Lego man can be seen soaring above the clouds and then floating in front of a glowing blue earth before the balloon bursts and he begins descending.
The two Grade 12 students at Agincourt Collegiate Institute used some cameras, some Lego blocks and various other bits and pieces to assemble their craft.

In Search of Chillwave

image via kindamuzik.net
Lately I've been feeling some tracks that apparently fall under this so-called "chillwave" genre. But I've also read that the scene surrounding it has already come and gone.

Two of the artists identified with the sound that I've been listening are Toro y Moi, and Washed Out.  However other acts such as Neon Indian and Twin Shadow are also associated with it.

UPDATE WITH STATEMENT - Hockey And Politics: Tim Thomas Refuses To Join The Boston Bruins For White House Celebration

(Photo via mobyrebuttal.blogspot.com)
Tim Thomas, the Conn Smythe trophy winner for the Stanley Cup Champion Boston Bruins, declined the White House's invitation to celebrate their accomplishment. Thomas is a known Tea Party supporter and we can only assume that this was the reason why he didn't show up. I don't agree with what Whyshynski wrote, but I will reserve my full comment until Thomas releases his statement on Facebook NHL.com.

My initial feeling is that this is a classless move by the Bruins goal tender. A visit to the White House is an honour and not an opportunity for grandstanding. Politics and pucks don't belong together.

Meet The New Boss, Same As The Old Boss(es)?: RIM Shakes Up Leadership Structure

RIM's newly appointed CEO Thorsten Heins (Photo via rim.com)
After months of speculation and pressure from investors, RIM has shuffled the top of the hill as former COO Thorsten Heins takes over as President and CEO. Gone is the ridiculous co-CEO structure as Balsillie and Lazaridis are now Board members. This is great news for RIM as they now have stability and fresh blood in the driver's seat.

According to what I've gathered, Heins will focus on marketing RIM's line of Blackberry products, OS 7.1, the Playbook and BB 10, and delivering a proper consumer experience with clear communications. RIM's fall from grace is due to their inability to recognise changes in the market (come on y'all, you couldn't create a SWOT analysis and action it??) as Apple and Google swooped in to take their market share with friendlier, stable handsets. Heins will need to be aware of these changes or will not be around long enough for anyone to remember his name.

I wish Heins all the best as he takes the reigns of a company in flux. If he can focus on setting reasonable expectations and delivering on them, RIM will be in a very good position in the market. If he doesn't, it will be more "same old, same old" as consumer confidence will continue to plunge. Heins' first order of business will be to ensure that OS 2.0 for the Playbook is released by the end of February. If he doesn't deliver on this, he will have some rough times ahead.

Dig On Madvillain's "Madvillainy"

P&B brings you the "Dig On" Classic Album Series.  We'll delve into our vaults to discuss the records that have profoundly impacted our musical tastes.  The albums we present are considered essential to anyone's record collection. In the end, you can't understand the present (or future) until you "Dig On" the past.

(Photo via sweetmelissarecords.com)
"Spot hot tracks like spot a pair of fat asses
Shots of the scotch from out of square shot glasses
And he won't stop 'til he got the masses
An' show 'em what they know now through flows of hot molasses"
- Lyrics from Madvillain's "ALL CAPS"

My introduction to Madvillain came via CMJ, the must read music magazine/bible for college radio stations, which I read when I was Music Director at CKDJ in Ottawa. My curiosity was tweaked thanks to a picture of a dude wearing a metal mask and the other with a do-rag. The reviews on "Madvillainy" were all decidedly positive. So there I was, the music guy who prides on knowing all that is "cool", puzzled as to why I hadn't picked up this album yet.

Rep Rising: Troy NōKA

This new cut from Mr. NōKA got the Megaupload-less world buzzing. NōKA, also known as Antwoine 'T Wiz' Collins, has produced tracks for Chris Brown, Ciara and Frank Ocean. He had his fingers all over "lovecrimes", "there will be tears" and "dust" from Nostalgia, Ultra. Those Ocean tracks are some of the strongest on the mixtape, and looks like NōKA is ready to spread his wings to up the current R&B game.

"Right Now" features T. Coles and has a clever interpolation of Kings Of Leon's "Sex On Fire" during the chorus. The song is thrown over a video called "Nuit Blanche" which is basically a power-of-love slow motion sequence that would make 300 director Zach Snyder blush. Is "Right Now" an "Ahhhhh yeahhh" or a "Hellllll no"? Drop your thoughts in the comments.

My Recommended Twist For The 2012 NHL All-Star Game In Ottawa

(Photo via ticketmaster.ca)
The NHL All-Star Player Fantasy Draft is taking place in Gatineau (which is just north of Ottawa for those who are geographically curious) at Casino du Lac-Leamy on January 26th. This Capital City All-Star Draft will follow the same format as last year: 2 captains, along with their alternates, will pick from the pool of 30 players on the draft floor. Your captains will be Daniel Alfredsson from the Ottawa Senators and Zdeno Chara from the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins (expect to hear boos for the big man from the still bitter Sens faithful in attendance).

In Which We Provide An Update On Elements of P&B Cool

(Photo via flickr.com)
I got inspired listening to some old records last week. I was dying to write about it, but didn't have the context or a good reason to post up on it. So I passed it by Turnbull and we both agreed that we need to show our love for the back catalog. Least to say that we were both in like Kanye West and an "artsy" nude female photo shoot. We are proud to present the "Dig On" series, which will be a bi-weekly post that explores the classic albums that shaped our music tastes. You can expect the first volume this Sunday, and it will alternate with the always wicked Friday Flashback.

(Photo via thecrashcity.com)
In other news, we added a new link to our approved blog section. TheCrashCity is a great site that brings together news with a focus on Hip Hop and R&B culture. Please make sure that you head on over and show them some love!

Finally, we are going to beef up some of the pages available on the blog with some additional content, particularly the "About Us" page. Get your subscription on to make sure that you stay in loop, whether it's via RSS, email, tumblr, twitter, facebook, google+ or a good ole bookmark in your inet browser of choice.

We always love receiving comments or feedback on what we're doing, so take a minute to drop us a line (paqman@paqmanandbull.com or turnbull@paqmanandbull.com). Think we missed out on an important story? We are open to ideas for posts. Wanna see more on a specific topic? Let us know. Do you think we should be more like Perez Hilton? That will never happen. Shaquille O'Neal Drops S-Bomb On Live NBA Broadcast

image via blogs.thescore.com
Newly retired NBA big man Shaquille O'Neal is still getting his legs under himself as a TV analyst.  The four-time World Champion joined the NBA on TNT team this year, alongside former players Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith, and longtime sportscaster Ernie Johnson.

Some may have felt that the gregarious Shaq would've made a natural transition into such a career, but if the accidental "s-bomb" he dropped last night is any indication, he still has some work to do.

Kenny Smith's reaction to the gaffe?  Priceless.

Down & Dirty in the Desert: Musings on the 2012 Coachella Lineup

image via thehiphopupdate.com
Its time to see which musical acts will entertain throngs of sweaty hippies in the California desert this spring.

That's right folks....an annual rite of passage took place this week via the Goldenvoice concert promotions group: The announcement of the 2012 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival Lineup.

A good thing about this festival is that it gives you a pretty strong idea of the bands that'll be playing on the circuit throughout the year, so even it you can't make it to Cali, you'll probably catch some of these acts at a closer, more accessible fest near you.

Looks like they're mixing things up this year by spreading Coachella over two consecutive weekends: April 13th to 15th, and 20th to 22nd.

Goldenvoice's head honcho, Paul Tollett, shares the reason for the back-to-back weekend approach:

(from Boston Globe):
"The thought of this selling out super quick, and the only people who get to go are the people who bought the first minute or bought tickets for more than they sold for, that didn’t seem great to us.  We didn’t want to go with more people and ruin the experience. We can’t add a midnight show, and we didn’t want to add another city or raise the ticket price. So we decided to add another weekend."

Here's the lineup:

Old Dirty Bastard, Live And Uncut: FBI Releases Russell Tyrone Jones' File

(Photo via sound.to)
Blogger Rich Jones is a curious dude, and we're all thankful for it. Jones requested ODB's FBI file through the Freedom Of Information Act on December 15th, 2011. He received it on December 23rd, 2011, so the system does work.

"Tebowmania" Running Wild as NFL Playoff Action Heats Up

image via bleacherreport.com

The 2011 NFL Playoffs kicked off with its Wild Card matchups in both NFC and AFC conferences last weekend.

Saturday's action included victories by the Houston Texans, who captured their franchise's first ever playoff victory by beating the Cincinnati Bengals 31-10; and the New Orleans Saints took out the Detroit Lions 45-28.

Sunday's early game saw the New York Giants beat down the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 to advance to the divisional semi-final against the defending Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

But so far, the real thriller of the tournament was Sunday's other AFC Wild Card game, which saw QB Tim Tebow and the surprising Denver Broncos shock the perrenial powerhouse Pittsburgh Steelers in a thrilling 29-23 overtime victory.

3 Reasons Why The Ottawa Senators Are A Team To Watch

(Photo via senators.nhl.com)
Many (everybody) predicted that the Ottawa Senators would be tenants in Bettman's basement this season, myself included. I wasn't going to flip out like I did last pre-season when all the puck pundits predicted the Sens would miss the playoffs. I decided to have no expectations for this club this year. In case you missed it, the Sens traded a few pieces away before the 2011 deadline that were considered "heart and soul" character players including fan favourite Mike Fisher and defensive specialist Chris Kelly. So, this Ottawa Senators team is rebooting and building the next chapter of their history through the draft and free agent signings. I would've never guessed that the Sens would be holding down fifth place in the conference, 2nd in the Northeast in January. Did I mention that they are one of the hottest teams in the league over the last 10 games? Ottawa is 7-1-2 with a couple come from behind wins. This has been their story this season.

Hear Blue Ivy Carter For The First Time, Guest Stars On Jay-Z's New Track

(Photo via respect-mag.com)
Well, that didn't take long! Jay-Z has already released a track announcing his elation thanks to his new bundle of joy, and also got the 2 day old superstar on the cut.

Hov also rhymes on a miscarriage that we have to assume was Beyonce's, which is really crazy to hear since he keeps his private life so close to the chest.

NHLPA Shoots Down The NHL BOG's Proposed Realignment For 2012-2013 Season; Bill Daly Is Mad

In this picture, Hedman represents the NHL, Neil the NHLPA (Photo via sfgate.com
I guess the NHL players read my post about the NHL Board of Governors' proposed realignment. The NHLPA thankfully rejected the proposal for several reasons, citing team travel and lack of involvement in the development of the new format as the main reasons. Here's the NHL's statement following the "bad news".

Carney Of The Black Keys Talks Too Much

(Photo via buzzbox.com)
Ohhhh MAN! Turnbull and Ram are gonna be pissed at me for writing this! Patrick Carney of the Black Keys talks waaaaayyyy too much...and all the shit that comes out of his mouth is negative. This is disappointing since they have been riding on a high over the last few years, which if your keeping score, is positive. I held back when he quoted off about not making their new album El Camino available on streaming services, which surely resulted in illegal downloads. But beefing with Nickleback for no apparent reason?

Paqman's Top 10 Albums Of 2011 - The Year Of The Mixtape

Tens of thousands of albums have been released this past year, so P&B are taking on the arduous task of breaking down our very own Top 10 Albums of 2011 List. This is the second of a 2-part series (Turnbull's first, with Paqman's second). We'll break down the albums, EPs, and mixtapes, etc, that made for quintessential listening throughout the year. If you don't see something on here that you feel should've made the lists, feel free to leave a comment or send us an email about it!

10) Foo Fighters - Wasting Light

The Foo had one hell of a year. They reestablished themselves as the premiere stadium rock band with a massive sold out tour. If you haven't checked out the "Back and Forth" documentary which chronicles the band's history and the making of "Wasting Light", it's a must for any fan of the Foo Fighters and modern rock.

P&B Approved Cuts: Bridges Burning, Rope, Arlandia

 9) Drake - Take Care

Canada's hottest export did not fail with his sophomore release. With longtime producer Noah "40" Shebib, Just Blaze and T-Minus, Drake proved that his star continues to rise as he delivers his trademark introspective lyrics over fantastically produced beats.

P&B Approved Cuts: Buried Alive Interlude, Under Ground Kings, Take Care
