NHLPA Shoots Down The NHL BOG's Proposed Realignment For 2012-2013 Season; Bill Daly Is Mad

I guess the NHL players read my post about the NHL Board of Governors' proposed realignment. The NHLPA thankfully rejected the proposal for several reasons, citing team travel and lack of involvement in the development of the new format as the main reasons. Here's the NHL's statement following the "bad news".

Bill Daly, NHL Deputy Commisoner, on the denial:

"It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a Plan that an overwhelming majority of our Clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including Players," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.  "We have now spent the better part of four weeks attempting to satisfy the NHLPA’s purported concerns with the Plan with no success.  Because we have already been forced to delay, and as a result are already late in beginning the process of preparing next season’s schedule, we have no choice but to abandon our intention to implement the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format for next season."

"We believe the Union acted unreasonably in violation of the League’s rights.  We intend to evaluate all of our available legal options and to pursue adequate remedies, as appropriate."

Legal options? Really? It's unfortunate that the talking heads for Pro Sports make asses of themselves on a regular basis. There is a diplomatic way of getting their message out. How about "Unfortunately, the NHLPA has denied the proposed realignment. We will continue to work withe the Players to create an new format that will work for all parties and stakeholders." Easy! Took me 30 seconds to come up with that.

My biggest concern is that this disagreement between the NHLPA and the League comes at a very bad time. The Collective Bargaining agreement is set to expire September 15th, 2012 and the NHLPA threw the first punch. Looks like Donald Fehr, NHLPA Executive Director, is not going to bow down to Bettman's crony tactics. The NHL set out to make the NHLPA look like the bad guy, and were successful. This does not bode well for the upcoming season and is making me extremely nervous.
