The Enigma That Is the New Bon Iver Album: The P&B BBM Chat

We here at P&B love technology. We both use Blackberry Messenger like crazy, so why not show our deep conversations to the world! This is a first in the Blogosphere (we think). Here it is: The P&B BBM Chat.

ATeezy: Hey man I gave the new Bon Iver record a listen on my drive up north last weekend. Its a real head-scratcher for me! I can't figure it out.
ATeezy: I think some parts are brilliant, but other parts I'm like "wtf I don't get it"
Paqman: I think that's it! I listened to this album at least 5 times and I really tried to like it cause I think Vernon is brilliant. It just didn't happen for me.
Paqman: I stayed away from checking out reviews so that I can develop my own opinion. Here are one of my theories on the final product: he had too many resources to work with. More instrumentalists. More toys. More money. More problems?

Friday Flashback - Centennial Celebration - We've Got To Find A Way, Mr. Gaye Edition

Big Daddy Kane featuring Easy Dred and Junior P - "W.G.O.N.R.S."

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Marvin Gaye's legendary album "What's Going On", here is a cut from Big Daddy Kane that samples the Motown star's classic title track. No video on this one, just Kane doing what he does best...taking care of business. Please leave your thoughts in the comments regarding your love for Gaye and his legacy.

This is also P&B's 100th post!!!!! Thanks for all of your support (and you can also drop some love for P&B in the comments!). We will continue to bring you quality posts on the exclusive insight tip. If You Missed The Pharcyde's Free Show at Dundas Square in Toronto This Weekend...

...you're in luck! Friend of P&B, Lama (@bonvoyagetohappy) snapped some sweet picks from the side of the stage while at Sunday's gratis gig by the SoCal Trio. The Pharcyde played all of your favorites including "Pass the Pipe", "Runnin'", "Somethin' That Means Somethin'", and the classic "Passin' Me By". Overall it was a fantastic time as they banged out their 90 minute set.

Peep more of Lady Lama's picks after the jump!

Cup, Cops, and Conn Smythe - An NHL Finals Post-Mortem - Boston Bruins Champions Edition

(Photo via soccer2008bygorddunphy.blogspot.com)
After 40 years of disappointment, the Boston Bruins prevailed with a perfect road win to claim the challis of the Hockey Gods. The Stanley Cup is returning to a team that I believed had no right or chance to win. Call it misdirected patriotism. Call it blind faith. Call it a sense of entitlement. You can spin it anyway you like, but the Bruins earned this championship and should've closed it out in less games.

Sick Kicks - Limited Edition Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary Chuck Taylors

(Photo via ohgizmo.com)
I played Super Mario Bros. soooo much I'm surprised the game cartridge didn't melt away in my Nintendo Entertainment System. In honor of the game's 25th anniversary, Converse is releasing custom limited edition Chucks for all the video game and sneaker heads. I'm guessing that these beauties will fly off the shelves in a blink of an eye.

Word is that they will be released within the next month or so. Loving the inner body design showing the coins on the Mario shoe and the Princess with the "Thank you Mario" message on the Bowser shoe.

In honor of this release, I will play video games all day.

Friday Flashback - Recidivism Edition

re·cid·i·vism: : a tendency to relapse into a previous condition or mode of behavior; especially : relapse into criminal behavior

The term basically sums up Scott Weiland's tumultuous career as frontman of Stone Temple Pilots, one of the most underrated Alt-Rock bands from the past 20 years.  Weiland's ongoing substance abuse issues were well documented, and may have hindered this truly great band from reaching their full potential.

"Vasoline" was the second single from the band's sophomore release, Purple.

Mavs Shut Off The Heat: Reflections on the 2011 NBA Finals

Stevenson likes the Dirk (Photo via adventuresofmrawesome.tumblr.com
I'm still tryin' to decompress after that Mavs/Heat NBA Championship Series. Some of the best playoff action I've ever seen....in ANY sport. I haven't watched an NBA Finals that intensely since Mike Jordan broke both of Bryon Russell's ankles with that sick crossover/push-off against Utah in '98.

The Oddest and Most Intriguing Stanley Cup Final In History - Boston Bruins Force Game 7 Versus Vancouver Canucks

(Photo via washingtonexaminer.com)
I've been watching hockey for close to 20 years. I've seen teams dominate the seven game final where there's a clear winner before the opening faceoff. On the other side of the puck, I've witnessed epic see-saw battles between 2 evenly matched, committed and determined clubs. You can always expect the unexpected in pro sports. The 2011 edition of the Cup Final is no exception, with unexpected underlined and bold....in 50 point font.

Without taking anything away from the Bruins, the Canucks were meant to dominate this series with authority and make it quick. Now here we are, 6 games in the books with every NHL fanboy's wet dream on tap: a deciding game 7. What happened? What's going to happen? Which bandwagon do I jump onto? The only way to get the answers we desperately seek is to have a Q&A...with myself.

Cardinals WR Steve Breaston Breaks Down Current NFL Labour Strife

Arizona Cardinals Wide Receiver Steve Breaston has taken to Youtube to express his empathy to NFL fans regarding the League's current labour dispute.  Breaston (aka Stevie Phantom) has taken sides with the fans, and has voiced concern that WE are the ones that stand to lose the most should the season not start this September.

Friday Flashback - Nas-El-Matic Edition

Nas - "The World is Yours"

From one of the most important hip hip albums of the 90s, here is "The World is Yours" from the essential Illmatic by Nas.

The main reason why we decided to offer you this track as this week's Friday Flashback is because WE CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO THE ELZHI MIXTAPE/TRIBUTE TO NAS' IILMATIC!!!! If you don't know what we're talking about, check out Turnbull's post about Elzhi's Elmatic mixtape. This is arguably the best mixtape of 2011...even though we are only half way through the year. Get it. Now.

NBA Madvillainy: The Miami Heat

photo kinda via thefanassociation.wordpress.com
In my recent posts about the NBA Playoffs, I've made mention of my ongoing disdain for the Miami Heat, so I felt it was necessary to delve deeper into what exactly it is that I don't like about this team. Then perhaps I might discuss exactly what I've grown to like and respect about this squad.

Let me start by pinpointing just what irks me about what has taken place in South Beach this season.

In Which The Kaiser Chiefs Are Officially Inducted Into The P&B "Player" Hall Of Fame

Inspired by Ice-T's classic cut "M.V.P.S.", this will be a recurring post paying tribute to anyone that exemplifies a true Player, including but not limited to these attributes: dedication, leadership, drive, focus, or innovation.

Album creation screen shots for the new Kaiser Chiefs album "The Future is Medieval" (photos via kaiserchiefs.com
The Kaiser Chiefs are a UK band that formed in Leeds around 97 and are jumping out of their 3 year hiatus with a bang. They are getting their fans involved on a level that I've never witnessed before. The Kaiser Chiefs are allowing you to select 10 songs from 20 they recorded for your own personalized, custom album. There are 100 184,756 unique playlists (UPDATE: Math has never been my strong suit, so if that figure is wrong please let me know...Thanks to Mark K for the help!) that can be created in the order that suits your taste. Once you select your songs with the old school switchboard page, you can create your album art. Your image options depend on which songs you initially selected for your playlist. Once your artwork has been created, you are prompted to pay for your custom album. Pretty cool, huh? It gets better. If you sell 8 copies of your custom record in the album store/H.Q., you get 1 pound for each one sold after that.

I haven't seen this kind of creativity and out the box thinking since Radiohead released "In Rainbows" as a pay-what-you-want download. The coolest part about all this is how supportive their label, Fiction Records, have been with this potentially game changing idea.

Kaiser Chiefs, putting this much freedom in your fans' hands and letting them share your revenue with this innovative concept make you a Player.

A Match Made In Controversial Heaven: Eminem Endorses Tyler, The Creator, Odd Future

(Photo kinda via justifytheory.blogspot.com and artistdirect.com)
Eminem has been know for stirring up some controversy in the past with his crude sense of humor and lyrics. So why wouldn't he give props to the new kings of shock Odd Future and Tyler, the Creator?

In Em's words, from mtv.com:

"I've heard enough to know that it feels like they're pushing boundaries and buttons, and that's definitely one of the things that I'm familiar with, especially when I first came out. I love it, I love the fact that they're doing that. And the dudes can rhyme."

Tyler is getting tons of press and the growing list of influential hip hop players in the game feeling his work will only add to his burgeoning popularity.

So the burning question is: When is Em gonna snag Odd Future for his label and when is the collab gonna drop (or ever happen)? Either way, P&B will keep you informed of any developments.

Friday Flashback - Alternatively Canadian Edition

Limblifter - "Tinfoil"

I was spinning some Canadian alternative from the 90s while I was cleaning today and this gem of a song popped into my head. "Tinfoil" was released in 96 by Limblifter from their self-titled debut. Originally meant to be a side project when they were playing with Age of Electric, the Dahle brothers (drummer Kurt and singer/guitarist Ryan) made this their full time gig once AOE broke up.

Based in Vancouver, they released a few albums after their debut but could not match it's popularity. Kurt up and left to join The New Pornographers while Ryan continues to carry the Limblifter name.

"Tinfoil" is a short track, but it's a good one!
